MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Important Dates
Wednesday, Nov. 23 & Sunday, Nov. 27: NO RE CLASSES (Thanksgiving break)
ATTENTION: Parents of Second Year of First Communion Preparation Students
(FC2, FCO2, FCMS2, HSFC)
First Communion sacramental preparation test dates:
Nov. 30 for Wednesday classes
Dec. 4 for Sunday classes
Students are expected to earn 75% or better on the test which will be graded and returned to students before Christmas break. The test will be administered again in March for any student who did not make 75%.
The sacramental preparation test ensures that the student has the basic knowledge and understanding of our faith to receive the Eucharist worthily. It is one of the elements we use to determine the readiness of a child for the reception of First Holy Eucharist.
The test is based on the Faith and Life 2 Jesus Our Life book. In addition to the basic tenets of our faith, students will be expected to know the Ten Commandments. This portion of the test may be taken orally, if the student so desires. (Order and phrasing of Commandments are unimportant.)
Your active participation in the faith formation of your child, your attendance at parent conferences, your child's mastery of the age-appropriate prayers, his or her good attendance in the RE classes, and his or her mastery of the sacramental preparation exam all ensure that your child will be prepared for the reception of the sacrament in May.
Please continue to talk about the faith with your child and continue to pray daily with him or her. Have a blessed and thankful Thanksgiving.
Liturgical Year: Advent
January 1 is New Year's Day for our secular calendar. However, New Year's Day for the Church is the First Sunday of Advent, which falls on the Sunday closest to November 30. The Latin word adventus means "approach" or "drawing near." During the season of Advent, as we draw near to the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas, we allow God to "prepare the way of the Lord," to "make straight the paths" of our hearts so they may more fully welcome the coming of our Savior.
Advent is a special time to celebrate with your children. They will learn about Advent and the Advent wreath in our religious education classes. You can help the season come alive for them at home with an Advent wreath and Advent traditions such as the Jesse Tree, the O Antiphons, the Advent chain, or the Posada. |
